Dataset Basics

The National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) acquires imagery during the agricultural growing seasons in the continental United States. The purpose of the program is to provide current information regarding agricultural conditions in support of the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) farm programs. In addition, NAIP imagery frequently supports disaster response.

The Natural Resouce Conservation Service (NRCS) provided Indiana University copies of the 4-band, uncompressed Geotiff quarter quad images. The Indiana Spatial Data Portal (ISDP) also has the compressed county mosaics available for download.

The USDA Aerial Photography Field Office (APFO) selected Surdex as the vendor to acquire and process imagery according to NAIP specifications for the 2012 Indiana imagery. The program’s base product is 1‐meter resolution DOQQs with 4 bands of data (R,G,B,NIR). Surdex acquired all imagery at 1‐meter resolution or better using multispectral cameras capturing all four bands simultaneously. The vendor used Cessna 441 (Conquest) aircraft to host the cameras and typically operated at %7e33,000’ (MSL). Surdex maintained the imagery in a seamless tiling scheme at 12 bits/pixel 4‐band (R,G,B,NIR) format until final formatting to 8 bits/pixel for delivery in DOQQ format. Image acquisition began June 6, 2012, and ended June 19, 2012.

The 2012 NAIP county mosaic dataset includes polygons (shapefile format) delineating the seam boundaries of images used to create the county mosaics. Users can use these polygons as a tool to determine the image source date for each section of a mosaiced image. The metadata for each quarter quad image includes the source date of the image. Included with the dataset metadata is a shapefile index for identifying the boundary of each image.
